Gift Bag
Year: 2024
Type: Student Project
Role: Graphic Design, Publication Design, Photography
Prompt: Tasked with designing a gift bag package to hold swag for a lavish fundraising gala for a non-profit of choice. The package consisted of a bag, tissue, and hang tag— all of which were required to be designed within 1C, 2C and CMYK (4C) color modes. The bag was intended to represent the cause and entice the generosity of wealthy donors.
Process: As part of this project, I designed and produced a custom gift bag inspired by the humanitarian efforts of Medecins Sans Frontieres. The process began with selecting the nonprofit organization, followed by thumbnail sketches to explore design possibilities. After developing an initial concept, I underwent rounds of critique and redesign to refine the visuals and messaging. Once the final design was approved, I moved into production—printing, assembling the bag, and carefully selecting materials to align with the brand’s ethos. The final steps included professional photography of the completed piece, followed by editing and touch-ups to present the project at its best.
Components & Production:
Gift Bag
Color Model: Duotone using Black (100% K only) and Pantone 185 C.
Production: Initially planned for organic-textured paper to complement the woven handles and gauze tissue, but after incorporating a printed background color, I opted for a heavier, bright white matte paper for a cleaner, more vibrant finish.
Fifth Color: Spot varnishing applied to photographs for subtle emphasis.
II. Hang Tag
Color Model: 4-color CMYK, chosen to accommodate an image of the world, reinforcing Médecins Sans Frontières’ global reach.
Production: Printed on white, soft-touch paper (e.g., Neenah Design Collection – Touche Papers Soft Touch) for a refined tactile experience.
Fifth Color: Polymer printing applied exclusively to the heartbeat line for an added design accent.
III. Tissue Paper & Handles
Material: White gauze with blue-stitched accents, layered to mimic traditional tissue paper while referencing medical bandages.
Handles: Natural white woven tape, carefully selected to complement the gauze and maintain a cohesive monochromatic aesthetic.
